Broken – 6 Truths About God’s Grace in an Unjust World

I recently learned some news from a loved one that left me absolutely broken.  The shooting pain my shattering heart felt for them right down to the tips of my toes I can only imagine was a fraction of the aching they felt that day.

If you’re like me, you often wonder why God would allow the ones we love so dearly to suffer so unjustly.  Or maybe, you, yourself are wondering why God has allowed you to suffer this way?  Maybe you’re wondering if He even cares anymore, if you’ve been forgotten, or if you’ve done something to deserve this suffering.  Well rest assured:  God is not punishing you.  He still loves you, and He does not want to see his children suffer.

So what does His word say about suffering?  Here are 6 Truths from God’s Word to help us understand our trials and persevere until His plan for us is revealed:

1. Because we are sinners born into a sinful world, we will have trouble:

John 16:33

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

2. God hears your hurt, your fear, your pain, your anxiety and wants you to share your burdens with Him and rest your weary soul in His arms:

Psalm 116:1-2

 I love the Lord, for he heard my voice;
he heard my cry for mercy.
Because he turned his ear to me,
I will call on him as long as I live.

1 Peter 5:7

Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

Matthew 11:28-30

 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

3. God not only hears your agony, He is there with you to encourage you and walk with you in and through this difficult journey:

Joshua 1:9-10

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Psalm 46:1

God is our refuge and strength,
an ever-present help in trouble.

2 Corinthians 12:9

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.

 John 14:16-17

And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.

John 14:26-27

But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

Romans 8:38-39

For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

4. Though you may not see it now, God still has an incredible plan for you:

Isaiah 55:8-9

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways my ways,”
declares the Lord.
“As the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.

Joshua 1:5

No one will be able to stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you.

Psalm 143:8

Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love,
for I have put my trust in you.
Show me the way I should go,
for to you I entrust my life.

Proverbs 16:3

Commit to the Lord whatever you do,
and he will establish your plans.

5. God will deliver you from this fire.  We don’t know if He will deliver you away from, around or through it, but rest assured that He has promised to be faithful.  And even though it can be hard when we are waiting, He has called us to be patient and trust in His timing:

Psalm 27:14

Wait for the Lord;
be strong and take heart
and wait for the Lord.

Romans 12:12

Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.

Proverbs 3:5-6

Trust in the Lord with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways submit to him,
and he will make your paths straight.

Isaiah 43:2

When you pass through the waters,
I will be with you;
and when you pass through the rivers,
they will not sweep over you.
When you walk through the fire,
you will not be burned;
the flames will not set you ablaze.

6. When we trust God with our future, even when it seems bleak, He reminds us that He can take the most painful things in our life and use them for good.  It is often through these hard times that He builds our character and gives us renewed Hope to carry on:

Psalm 147:3

He heals the brokenhearted
and binds up their wounds.

Romans 5:3-4

Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.

Romans 8:28

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

So be encouraged, dear one, that even in this time of pain, suffering, and brokenness, when you can’t understand why you would so unjustly have to suffer, that the grace of God is still surrounding you and His strength will uphold you.  Trust His plan and His promises and remember that you have not been forgotten. I can’t wait to see the blessing He has in store for you.

Dear Father, we come to you this week with broken hearts, not just for ourselves but for for those we love and care for.  Father, we know that we will experience hard times, but we pray that you would reign down your mercy upon those who are suffering, that they would feel the power of your strength, the hope of your presence.  Lord, would you please encourage their hearts and minds and may they know without a doubt that you have an incredible plan for their life and grant them peace and patience while they wait on You to reveal it.  Please protect, provide for and comfort them.  And Father, please show those of us who love them how we can come around to support, encourage, love and care for them during this difficult time.  Help us to love them like Jesus and give you the glory.

In Jesus’ Precious and Matchless Name,

Amen

I would be honored to pray over you or a loved one.  Prayer requests can be submitted here:
